Tomato Rice


This is one of the best rice recipe which i have learnt being in south India.They call it thakkali sadam .I have learnt this from one of my Tamili friend's sister long three years ago and cooks it most frequently at home and most surprisingly Tandra also knows how to cook it...and really she too cooks it perfectly..Amazing!!!!




Tomato Rice
Ingredients:

  • Cooked white rice:4-5 cup
  • Ripen Tomato:400gm
  • Onion:300 gm chopped
  • Garlic:10-12 pods
  • Kulambu chilli powder:3 tsp
  • Red chilli powder:1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves:10-12
  • Mustard Seeds:1 tsp
  • Turmeric: a pinch
  • Oil
  • Salt as per taste

Method:

  • Cut tomatoes in small dice size pieces and onions finely chopped but not so thinly required and keep it aside.
  • Now take a kadai.Heat oil, add mustard seeds and half of cury leaves, once mustard seeds started to splutter.Add chopped onion and saute for 5 mins.
  • Add tomatoes and saute till it gets mashy and raw smell of tomatoes are gone.
  • Add garlic and Kulambu chilli powder and cook stirring frequently for 8-10 min in low heat or till the oil separates from the gravy.
  • Once done add half cup water and bring it to boil till oil separates.Add curry leaves now,Stir for 2 mins.Tomato sauce is done.
  • Now add rice in tomato paste and mix gently till all the rice gets coated with the sauce.Add salt as per taste.
  • Serve with apalam or papad.
N.B:How to make Kulambu chilli powder?

Mix salt, pepper, Fenugreek, cumin seeds, Fennel, Tur dhall, Turmeric, Mustard, Dry Curry leaves in equal proportion. Coriander and chilli litle more than the other ingredients.Grind it to powder. Kulambu chilli powder is ready to use.one can store this power upto 3 months.
